Terms of service
Last updated 16 September 2026
These terms cover the app at app.quilljar.com and the printed books you can order through it. Quilljar is run from Melbourne, Australia. By creating a family account you agree to them. If anything here is unclear, write to hello@quilljar.com.
Who can hold an account
- An account is opened and held by a parent or guardian who is at least 18. Children use the studio through profiles inside that account; they do not have accounts of their own.
- You are responsible for who in your household uses the account and for keeping the parent PIN to yourself.
- The studio is designed for primary-school-aged children, with a parent nearby.
Your family's work is yours
- Everything a child writes or draws in Quilljar belongs to your family. We claim no rights in it.
- We use it only to provide the service: storing it, showing it back to you, producing the book files and, when you order, sending those files to the printer.
- You can download a reading PDF of any book at any time, and you can ask us to delete the whole account and everything in it. The print-ready files (with bleed, a wraparound cover and a spine) come with a printed-book order and are yours to keep afterwards.
AI features
- The writing coach and illustration tools are off until a parent turns them on, and a parent can set daily limits or turn them off again at any time.
- The coach comments and asks questions; it does not write the story. Illustrations are generated from the child's own descriptions and approved character references.
- Requests are checked for personal details before anything is sent to an AI provider, and providers are configured not to retain what they receive. The privacy policy has the detail.
- AI output can be wrong or odd. A parent reviews illustrations before they go into a book.
- Switching AI on requires a parent to read a short statement of what is sent, to whom, and on what terms, and to agree to it. We keep a record of who agreed, when, and to which wording, and ask again if the wording changes. Every AI request the family makes is logged, with what the coach said, and the parent can read the log in their workspace.
Writing, coaching and pictures
- Writing in Quilljar is free for every child in the family, with no time limit.
- Every family starts with an allowance of coach requests and illustration credits at no charge. Extra illustration credits can be bought through Stripe and do not expire while the account is open.
- We may introduce a paid membership later. If we do, existing families will be told by email at least 30 days ahead, and nothing already made or bought is affected.
Printed books
- Printed books are made to order by a print-on-demand partner and posted to the address you give. The exact price, including delivery, is shown before you pay.
- The book is printed from the files as they are when you order. Please check the preview first; we cannot change a book once it has gone to print.
- You can cancel an order for a full refund while it is on hold with the printer (about two hours after paying). After that, see Refunds and delivery.
- Books are for your family's own use. You must have the right to print anything included in them.
Acceptable use
- Do not use Quilljar to write or generate material that is unlawful, hateful, sexual, or intended to harm a child or anyone else.
- Do not attempt to break into, overload or reverse-engineer the service.
- We can suspend an account that breaks these rules. We will tell you why, and refund any unused membership period unless the breach was serious.
Availability and liability
- We aim to keep Quilljar available and your work backed up, but we do not promise uninterrupted service. Export your books if you want a copy outside Quilljar.
- Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under the Australian Consumer Law. Beyond those rights, our liability to you is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim.
Changes and contact
We may update these terms; if the change matters, we will email the account holder before it takes effect. These terms are governed by the laws of Victoria, Australia. Questions go to hello@quilljar.com.
